treatment details

As we age the skin loses its elasticity and collagen causing our facial features to change. Lines and hollows start to become more noticeable and are often described as hills and valleys on the face. Environmental factors such as pollution and sun exposure will also age the skin more prematurely. Common examples of lines and wrinkles are the lines at the side of the mouth ie from the nose to the sides of the mouth which are called nasolabial folds or flattening of the cheek area. Dermal fillers are very safe injectable gels (when administered by an experienced medical practitioner) which provide hydration and structure to smooth away the appearance of lines, wrinkles and creases, and enhance facial shape. They are used to plump up and temporarily fill in these lines which have developed and can be used alone or in combination with other treatments.

Rather than simply 'filling in' a line it is best to assess the face first. We often advocate volumisation in order to best support areas of the face and to correct the volume loss that has developed as part of the normal ageing process. Volumisation will not lead to a ‘pillow face’ which is often a concern we hear from patients, the volumisation will simply act to support underlying structures of the face. A good way to think of them is as ‘scaffolding’ offering support.

Dermal fillers can be composed of hyaluronic acid, alpha hydroxy apatite or collagen. The dermal fillers used within dermalclinic® are hyaluronic acid based and as such are safe and reversable. Depending on which product is chosen from the many available to us, the longevity of the product can be between nine months and in some cases up to two years. Your practitioner will advise you of the longevity at your consultation appointment. Longevity is affected based on product choice and also dependant on the area of the face that it is injected into and the level of injection. A dermal filler injected deeply in a less mobile area of the face such as the temple for example will normally last longer that a lip dermal filler, which are placed in the highly mobile mouth area.

There are different brands of dermal filler available and each brand typically offers different variants of their product to suit different treatments. For example, the product for lip enhancement will be different to that for fine lines around the eyes, or to that used for the backs of hands.

At dermalclinic® we pride ourselves on using dermal fillers which have a thorough medical heritage and scientific safety profile. The most frequently used range of dermal fillers used at dermalclinic® are from the Restylane Range of dermal fillers. The range consists of Restylane Volyme™ Restylane Refyne™ Restylane Defyne™ Restylane Skinboosters™ Restylane Lyft™ and Restylane Kysse™. These FDA approved dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid and contain lidocaine to make the treatments more comfortable. Compared to many newer dermal fillers that have recently entered the market, Restylane has a strong research and development history to support it and most other dermal fillers use Restylane as the gold standard to bench mark themselves against. Restylane is therefore the main product range used within dermalclinic® as we are assured of its safely for our patients.

Other dermal fillers that are also based on hyaluronic acid and that patients may be familiar with, are products such as Juvederm Smile™ Juvederm Volite™ Juvederm Voluma™ and Juvederm Ultra. Another hyaluronic acid range is Teoxane with dermal fillers known as Teosyal Redensity™, Teosyal Kiss™, Teosyal Ultra Deep™.

For patients looking for a biostimulator to hydrate the skin and therefore provide a gentle plumping effects is called Profhilo. Profhilo which is known as a bioremodeling dermal filler it and requires a course of treatments to be performed to obtain the hydrated results desired by patients. Profhilo contains a very high level of hyaluronic acid, making it a very effective hydrator. This treatment is used in dermalclinic® on the face, neck, décolletage and hands.

Here at dermalclinic®, we always strive to ensure our treatments are as pain-free as possible, so even though dermal fillers contain Lidocaine (a local anaesthetic) we will still offer you a complimentary numbing cream or dental block (like at the dentist), so that your face or lip/mouth area is completely comfortable during treatment and as pain free as possible. We are also experts at using canulas which are like blunt needles. These cannulas pass under the skin and because they aren’t sharp, they are less likely to puncture a blood vessels, so less chance of bruising. An aftercare sheet is provided to all patients with our out of office contact details to offer reassurance to all patients in case you have any questions regarding your treatment.

No dermal fillers used by dermalclinic® are permanent, and all have extensive scientific support. Modern dermal fillers composed of hyaluronic acid can be dissolved with a prescription only medication.

Many patients have one or two areas of concern that they wish to have treated whilst others choose to have a full rejuvenation – not to look different, but to look refreshed, rested and a better version of themselves!

Frequently performed treatments include those for expression lines such as lines at the side of the mouth, nose to mouth (nasolabial) lines, lines around the mouth (smile lines and smoker's lines) lip enhancements and cheek fillers. Dermal fillers are also used to perform non-surgical face lifts, non-surgical nose jobs (nose augmentation), temple augmentation, chin projection or chin lengthening and jawline definition. Dermal fillers can also help to improve the appearance of some scars.
